Ninagawa "Titus"

Titus Andronicus (what else?) as envisioned by the always stunning Ninagawa company, currently performing at Stratford-upon-Avon. Ben Brantley reviews them along with other Shakespeare highlights "over there" this summer.Brantley sees this moment as "borrow[ing] from the pristine style of vintage Peter Brook, with an all-white abstract set and red ribbons for stage blood." Uh, you might want to look up where Brook got that ribbon idea first, Ben. The cultural influence seems to be the other way around...

A recent Simpsons quote about their fake Itchy and Scratchy musical "Stab-A-Lot" has Lisa stating: "I love the use of streamers as blood. It robs the violence of its power."
But I can't agree. This picture from Titus is much more unsettling than gallons of more realistic stage blood.
At least Brantley didn't credit The Simpsons with inventing this technique.
I love that picture and am glad you posted it (complete with credit). Another quibble with Brantley's comment: the red stuff looks much more like red yarn than red ribbons.
