It's On!

2/3 of Broadway now shut down.

Stagehands pull out the pickets early Saturday morning, just in time to cancel the first of five Grinch matinees.

Expect surprise box office surges at Mauritius.

Stay tuned.

Thanks to stagehand David for tipping us off here in Comments 10pm last night.

Hello Garrett,

Since more people probably read your blog than mine, I thought it moght be worthwhile to post a comment here linking to two blogs which appear relatively new and are written by stagehands. Both are currently on strike, writing about it, and providing some inside perspective.

The first it The Humble Nailbanger, a third-generation IATSE guy who apparently works on the TV side.

The second is OneNYC Stagehand, whose blog title says it all.

The archives of both blogs provide some background and perspective as well relative to how the buildup to the strike took place. Both blogs should provide a good counterpoint to the typical "my family won't see Grinch and we came so far" news stories which I expect the mass media will foist upon the general public. -Tom Loughlin

Hi. I'm sorry to barge in like this but i saw your post and i've heard about this strike and for a long time i've been sort of irritated by the high cost of Broadway (i'm half chinese and learned to be cheap from my grandmother.) Anyway, I'm a musical theatre writer and my collaborators and I, partly in response to things like high ticket prices and prohibitive costs, are trying to get a new media meld of youtube videos and musical theatre - we're filming in Machinima and one of our goals is to bring theatre to audiences for free -- we eventually want to produce an entire new musical on youtube.

I know it's really bad form to post links and stuff on a blog so i wanted to say that if you're interested at all in hearing more, i'd love to speak to you and send you links. I'd love to hear responses to this scheme from larger communities of people who know theatre. Please feel free to contact me at heidi.heilig@gmail.com.
