Parks & Public: "365"

Something the Public is doing well!

To produce Suzan-Lori Parks's ambitious cycle of 365 short plays--entitled 365 Days/365 Plays (yes, she wrote one a day for a year)--the Public knows it can't do it alone. So they're looking for collaborators. So if you're a small company anywhere in NYC, apply!

I don't think she's a good playwright, in my opinion - she's not really a dramatist at all, just a decent poet who happened to be in the right place at the right time - just my opinion, that's all, but I wish they'd spend their time looking to new playwrights and not slumming wealthy poets.

whoa, hold on boys. i agree with anonymous1 that this is an imbecilic project -- a gimmick, really. but come on, she is indeed a fine playwright. imperceptible mutabilities, her first major work, is poetic, yes, but dramatically scored and structured -- as are later works, though some are more successful than others. and wealthy???? what? because she has a teaching job? puh-leeze.

It's hard to get into the mind of a theatre administrator who would look at this project and conclude that it's the best use of the organization's intellectual and financial capital.

Gimmicky, perhaps a bit, but I think it's exciting. And according to my quick reading of the guidelines, all the individual companies will bear all of the production costs--the Public just lends marketing support (not a small thing when you're the Public. As for Suzan Lori Parks--I confess to being bewildered sometimes when I try to read her plays, but the ones I've seen--Venus, Fucking A, Topdog--have all had lots to recommend them: vivid, surprising characters, strong narratives, great language. And what's more--they're never boring. I mean that as high praise. Granted, there are bound to some (even plenty) stinkers in 365 days, but what a great way to make theater a daily experience, and to potentially see lots of work from lots of different companies without having to risk huge amounts of time and money as an audience member.

Perhaps we could have an SLP University where theatres could learn exactly how to properly present a Susan Lori Parks project. The tuition could be written off as business expense.
