Miller's "Matthew"
Times music critic Anthony Tommasini provides a wonderful appreciation today of Jonathan Miller's staging of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion"--currently in a return engagement at BAM.
Go. Even if you think Oratorios are not your thing. It's an amazing piece of truly musical theatre, or should I say music-drama.
Tomassini pairs the piece with a less theatrical performance of Bach's "St. John Passion"--the one with all the Jewish references. Yes, it's one of the most anti-Semitics of all masterpieces, and performed without incident. Where was the context? Where was Brian Lehrer?
And what about the children? Has anyone thought of the children???
Oh the humanity...
