The Lot of the Playwright

Two takes on being a playwright in the US today.

George Hunka offers some help sketicism on what we mean by "emerging" artists.

And Mark at "Mr. Excitement" tracks a growing rebellion amongst playwrights against development hell and toward more--imagine--production.

Some interesting British viewpoints on this topic (more or less!): Young playwright Fin Kennedy had a great piece in the Guardian a few months ago about the frustrations of young/new writers. Even more interesting, though, were the comments, mostly from young writers, but some from dramaturgs, literary managers, etc., to a blog posting about the piece.

All this in a country where, it seems to me, there's much more funding for young writers.

Mac Wellman wrote a great essay about this issue, lo some 15 or 20 years ago. Maybe in Performing Arts Journal - I can't remember. Old tune; new verse.
