New Guthrie: One Year Later
Nice meaty Minnesota NPR piece (in print and audio forms) on the impact of the new Guthrie superdome on other local theatres in the hood. If you were expecting negative reactions... you'd be wrong! (At least according to this story.)
Does a "rising tide lift all boats" in Minneapolis theatre, as is claimed here? Please chime in, you Minnesotans.
One thing that did impress me--Guthrie has one new small studio space often housing productions by other companies. Very nice. But not clear from this whether those productions are genuinely community outreach or rental income.
(Easy enough fact to establish, I guess. Maybe I'll work on that.)

I've made many enjoyable trips to both the old and new Guthrie. As much as the sentimental side of me hates to see an old space razed, the new Guthrie - with all of its theatres together for the first time, as well as great venues for dining and one of the most unique, stunning vistas of the Mississippi River to be found in Minneapolis - is a veritable feast for the senses.
It's a must-see stop for anyone visiting Minneapolis, theatregoer or otherwise. I enjoy making it a regular destination.
With all the other great theatre in the Twin Cities, I have to believe that it is helping set the bar even higher on what theatregoers can expect, regardless of the venue.
