Shrekking Ball
Undeterred by the, uh, large reception for Little Mermaid, Dreamworks is going full speed ahead with pre-production for Shrek The Musical. A fall tryout in Seattle is set.
The team: Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. Between the artsy composer of Caroline or Change and the Pulitzer-winner of the weepy Rabbit Hole...does this sounds like a fun musical to you?
I'll give them talent. I just wish they were spending their time on something else.
But who am I kidding.

Yes, but the composer Tesori is also responsible for the bubbly Thoroughly Modern Millie that made the perky Sutton Foster a huge star. And Lindsay-Abaire made his name with a string of absurdist comedies including the hilarious Fuddy Meers. So you can't say these people are void of FUN. That along with the director of Avenue Q sounds like a pretty swell team if they HAVE to do this. But god, do they HAVE to do this? Honestly?
One thing that gives me a bit of hope though - the movie got a lot of its laughs by skewering Disney movies. Might the musical turn its teeth on the Disney theatrical ventures a little bit? Oh here's hoping. That WOULD be fun.
I agree with Gary on the fun that could be had at Disney's expense. But having never seen one "Shrek" movie, let along any of the sequels, this appeals to me like a night out with Mel Brooks.
