So why did Martin Scorsese have to wait 30 years and several masterpieces to win an Oscar for "The Departed"?
Because this one was successful.
Still, despite the film's disappointments and the stupidity of awards in general, I can't begrudge the overdue acknowledgment of one of my favorite dramatic artists, and one of the most original America has ever spawned.

He should have won for Raging Bull, but what are you going to do? At least he was finally recognized.
I think what did it was that joke Jon Stewart made last year: Three-Six Mafia, one Oscar. Martin Scorsese, 0.
And I loved seeing him walk offstage in between Coppola and Spielberg.

I agree. I'm psyched that Marty has finally been recognized, but that doesn't mean that it isn't still criminal that he lost the directing Oscar to Robert Redford for "Ordinary People." That's right, kids. Robert Redford. Ordinary People. And don't even get me started on the fact that he wasn't even nominated for "Taxi Driver," perhaps his masterpiece. I hate to make too big a deal about all of this, because his accomplishments matter more, and will last longer, than the decisions of a bunch of coked-up Hollywood insiders.
